The figures come from a survey conducted by Ekot, to which 190 municipalities responded. More than 90 of them say that some students have not returned to school after the summer holidays.
Several municipalities say they are actively trying to contact guardians and do not know where the children are.
"It's impossible to know what kind of environment they're in if we can't reach them. Clearly, it doesn't feel right. It's our job to get them to school," Andreas Lundholm, head of education in Ljusnarsberg municipality, tells the radio.
