The discovery was made in connection with an eviction in the city's 15th arrondissement, when police called in an animal rights organization for help.
"We were told that there were about thirty cats in the apartment and that they needed to be moved out," the organization's chairman, Thomas Moreau, told the newspaper.
But in reality it was about twice that many.
We also found dead kittens in the freezer, says Moreau.
He says he believes it is the psychiatric condition animal hoarding, known in French as “Noah syndrome” - a reference to the Bible story of Noah’s Ark.
