Every year, demonstrations and commemorations are held to mark the coup d'état on September 11, 1973, when Augusto Pinochet took power in the country.

A total of 284 people were arrested on Thursday and Friday, according to Security Minister Martín Arrau, who is part of the right-wing government that took office earlier this year.

The people were arrested during clashes between police and protesters.

This year is the first time since the Pinochet era that no official events have been held by the authorities in connection with the anniversary, according to AFP.

During Pinochet's rule, more than 3,200 people were killed or disappeared. In addition, tens of thousands were imprisoned and tortured.
