More than 140 million people are feared to be affected as a major snowstorm sweeps across the US. More than 8,000 flights have been canceled or delayed - and a state of emergency is in effect in 16 states.

From New Mexico in the south to New England in the northeastern United States, weather warnings have now been issued. 16 states, including New York, Virginia and North Carolina, have declared states of emergency, CNN reports.

Areas around Washington, D.C. and New York are expected to receive up to 30 centimeters of snow.

Air traffic is being severely affected. On Saturday, more than 3,000 flights were canceled or delayed, and on Sunday, 5,000 flights are expected to be canceled. DN reports that SAS has canceled flights from Copenhagen to the U.S.

It was already clear on Saturday that several schools in Philadelphia, for example, would be closed on Monday.
