Authorities in Nepal say 987 people have been found and confirmed dead after the disaster in the border areas with Tibet last Wednesday. On the other side of the border, Chinese authorities are reporting 16 deaths.
3,916 people are reported missing in Nepal, of whom more than 500 are foreign nationals. In China, more than 500 are reported missing, of whom about half are believed to be foreign nationals.
Tibetan rights groups are raising the alarm that Chinese authorities are covering up the extent of the disaster and a higher death toll, reports The Guardian, among others. China's Foreign Ministry dismisses it as a smear campaign.
