The country's hardline regime brutally cracked down on nationwide protests that preceded the Iran war at the beginning of the year. However, the exact number of people killed or arrested by security forces has not been determined by independent observers.
Iran is one of the countries in the world that executes the most people annually, often after arbitrary trials condemned by human rights groups. Last year, more than 1,630 people were executed in the country, according to two human rights groups. The groups described the number as the highest since 1989.
