The majority of cases involve men. Last year, three-quarters of people who had been dead in their homes for at least a week were men. Six out of ten of the deceased were over 65 years old.
The largest increase is seen in Stockholm County, which last year recorded 77 deaths in which a person had been found deceased at home for at least a month, compared with 60 in 2024.
The statistics are based on the death investigations carried out by the Swedish Board of Forensic Medicine on behalf of the police and include people found deceased in a private home. The time was calculated from the registered date of death, or from the date the person was last seen alive, to the date the deceased was found.
