In the early 2000s, around 10 percent of 65-74-year-olds were employed. By 2023, that proportion had doubled to 20 percent.
And the increase continues. By 2025, the employment rate had increased to 22.2 percent, which translates to 232,000 people.
"This means that more than one in five people in the age group 65–74 had a job in 2025," says Charlotte Breitz, statistician at Statistics Sweden, in a press release.
Most people who choose to work longer work part-time. And 38 percent are self-employed.
