Suicides in U.S. immigration detention are on the rise. At least ten people, all men, have died by suicide since January 2025. Nine of the men were Latin American migrants and one was Chinese. Seven of the ten had not committed violent crimes in the United States.
Typically, few, if any, suicides are recorded annually in ICE custody.
Police personnel have ignored warning signs, delayed treatment for mental illness and failed to monitor people at high risk of suicide in custody, the review shows.
The AP's review is based on ICE data, autopsy reports, medical examiner's decisions and police records.
