More must get vaccinated

The spread of influenza and covid-19 is expected to increase during the winter. Far too few people have vaccinated themselves, according to the Public Health Agency (PHA).

All individuals 65 years or older are recommended to get vaccinated against influenza. By mid-November, 56 percent of them have been vaccinated. Among individuals in medical risk groups aged 18-64, only 11 percent have vaccinated themselves against covid-19, writes the Public Health Agency on its website.

"Many elderly have already vaccinated themselves, but the vaccination coverage is still too low," says Tina Crafoord, unit manager.

The spread of covid-19 and influenza is currently low compared to previous years. However, around 300 patients with covid-19 are already being cared for within inpatient care.

"The winter influenza season is in the starting blocks and is expected to get underway in the coming weeks, although the exact timing is difficult to predict. Covid-19 is already causing serious illness for individuals in risk groups. It is therefore high time to get vaccinated while vaccines are available and before the Christmas holidays begin," says Tina Crafoord.
