More and more elderly people are receiving debt collection demands. Almost 15 percent of all new debt collection demands concern people over 65. That is an increase of 6 percent in one year and 15 percent in two years, according to recent figures from the Swedish Debt Collection Association.

But overall, debt collection claims are decreasing. According to Swedish Debt Collection, the number of new claims decreased by 10 percent in September, compared to the same month last year.

Nevertheless – the total debt burden to debt collection agencies has been increasing steadily for a long time, and at the turn of the year 2024/2025 was 125 billion SEK. There are also more new cases added each month than are closed.

The debts that are collected are often relatively modest amounts. Almost every other debt is for 500 kronor or less.

It is now taking a little longer for people to pay off their debts – a clear sign that more households are financially vulnerable, according to Swedish Debt Collection Agency.
