Last year, 15,643 prison sentences were handed down in the country's district courts, according to Brå. That's 4 percent more than in 2024 and an increase of a whopping 48 percent compared to 2016.

The increase is mainly in longer prison sentences - those over six months.

"We see a clear trend over the last decade in which both the number of prison sentences and the sentences imposed continue to increase," says Martin Jonasson, statistician at Brå, in a press release.

When it comes to sentences where murder is the main crime, the increase is primarily seen in more people being sentenced for conspiracy to commit murder and for preparation for murder.
