Montreal opened the game on the road with a shock, scoring 2–0 after 4 minutes and 27 seconds.
Buffalo were ineffective, managing only one goal on 30 shots. The consolation goal came on a breakaway by Zach Benson, who from just outside the crease poked the puck into a nearly open net late in the second period.
"We got off to a terrible start, it's not easy to come back when you're two goals down so early. Overall, it was a terrible performance from our side," a disappointed Rasmus Dahlin told Sportbladet.
The score is now 1–1 between the teams in the series.
