Montreal secured the last so-called wildcard spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs when Carolina was defeated with 4–2 in tonight's NHL.

The Canadian Kaiden Guhle scored two of Montreal's goals. The long-awaited win comes after the Canadian team lost three matches in a row where they had the opportunity to secure a playoff spot.

This means that the playoff tree is clear for the Stanley Cup, where Montreal will face Washington, who won their division in the regular season with the most points in the Eastern Conference.

The first matches in the playoffs will be played on Sunday night, when Winnipeg hosts St Louis and Dallas hosts Colorado.

The quarterfinals: Toronto–Ottawa, Tampa–Florida, Washington–Montreal, Carolina–New Jersey, Winnipeg–St Louis, Dallas–Colorado, Vegas–Minnesota, Los Angeles–Colorado.

The first matches will be played on Sunday night.
