The power outage, which began at 11:30 local time on Sunday, has not yet been fully rectified.
A monkey has come into contact with a transformer in our power grid and caused an imbalance in the system, says Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody.
The incident occurred in a suburb in the southern parts of the capital city of Colombo. The power later returned in some areas. It is unclear when the power outage will be fully over.
Engineers are working on it to try to restore the power as soon as possible, says the minister.
Sri Lanka's inhabitants had to endure daily power outages during the summer of 2022 when the country was in an economic crisis.
The gas stations ran out of gasoline and diesel, which forced the thermal power plants to ration electricity to 13 hours a day.
