Both AIK and Modo are tipped to finish high in this year's HockeyAllsvenskan. It was also a crowd figure worthy of a top match, with 13,950 spectators - a new record for a season opener in HockeyAllsvenskan.
But there would be no victory celebration for the home fans.
Modo started clearly the better and dominated the first two periods, leading 2-0 after goals from Victor Berglund and Erik Jinesjö Karlsson.
AIK created nerves in the match with a goal from Christopher Bengtsson.
In the hunt for an equaliser, the home team pulled the goalkeeper with two minutes left, but the payoff in the final minutes went to the away team.
Erik Jinesjö Karlsson intercepted a pass, broke away and made it 3-1 into an empty net.
