India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken on the phone with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj, ahead of an upcoming meeting between Modi and Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

”We exchanged views on the ongoing conflict, its humanitarian aspect and attempts to restore peace and stability”, Modi writes on social media.

Zelenskyj describes the conversation as ”fruitful and important” and adds that he repeated Ukraine's openness to a meeting with Putin.

”India is ready to make the necessary efforts and send the appropriate signals to Putin and other leaders”, Zelenskyj continues in the statement on X.

The meeting between Modi and Putin is expected to take place on Monday, in connection with a meeting with the cooperation organization SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) in Chinese Tianjin where leaders from around 20 countries participate.

India has good relations with Russia, ties that have endured despite also pursuing closer security cooperation with the US and other Western allies. Modi has refrained from condemning Russia's war in Ukraine and has tried to position himself as a mediator.
