The American pharmaceutical company Moderna, together with Merck, has developed a vaccine based on mRNA technology. A study now shows that the vaccine slows the recurrence of malignant melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer.

Moderna's share price surges more than 60 percent in pre-market trading on the US stock market. Merck shares are also rising, but to a much lesser extent.

However, the study results do not show exactly how effective the vaccine is - that is, how long patients live without the cancer coming back.
