During his speech at Järva Week in Spånga in northwest Stockholm, Minister of Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa (M) described it as "a home ownership movement for the suburbs."
"Suburban residents who currently live in municipal public housing should have an increased opportunity to buy their own homes. We want to give more people the chance to own their homes, and to feel a sense of responsibility, freedom and security," says Dousa.
The M proposal means that if at least two-thirds of the tenants vote to buy out their municipally owned property, it will be enough for a conversion to tenant-owned apartments. Today, approval from the landlord is required for such a deal, but with the Moderates' proposal, municipal landlords could be forced to sell.
