The penalty for aggravated assault on a woman currently ranges from one to six years in prison.

Many people think the low penalties for repeated violence and harassment are provocative, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M).

We can talk about a maximum of one year for crimes that practically ruin people's lives.

The Moderates also want to investigate whether it should be easier to convict for gross violation of a woman's privacy. Currently, the man must have committed assault on at least three occasions against a woman he has or has had a close relationship with.

Does it work?

The event was held at a law firm in Stockholm.

Lawyer Rebecca Lagh believes that tougher sentences could have an effect. The victimized woman would be protected from the convicted man for a longer period of time. More suspected perpetrators would also be held in custody while the police investigation continues.

Kristersson also points to other consequences of tougher penalties, such as giving the police increased opportunities to use secret coercive measures, such as wiretapping.

How the Moderates want to increase sentences and for which crimes is still unclear.

We are open to reviewing all penalties that are relevant to protecting women against violent men, says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M).

More actions

Rebecca Lagh believes that much has been done in recent years to improve the situation of women subjected to violence, but points out that more can be done.

For example, "women's shelters" where women can go and get help with all the practical things needed when they have to stay away from their husbands. More money for sheltered housing. Measures to better enforce contact bans when the husband and wife have shared custody of children. Ensure that electronic monitoring of the husband is used at an earlier stage.

We have to do many things at the same time, says Kristersson.

The Moderates have stated that the fight against men's violence against women is just as important as the fight against gang violence. The party is planning more actions in the election campaign to "protect women's peace in the country".
