Disney's feature film version of "Moana" grossed approximately SEK 415 million in North America during its opening weekend. Despite the film being number one at the box office, industry magazine Variety describes the result as "catastrophic" considering the production budget of approximately SEK 2.4 billion, excluding marketing. The film also performed poorly internationally, earning just over SEK 500 million.

Analysts say the problem is timing: the 2016 original is still popular, and the sequel "Moana 2" was a huge hit shortly before the new version. Unlike older Disney remakes like "The Lion King" and "Aladdin," the new film lacks the nostalgia factor that attracted audiences in the past.
