Anders Torstensson is stepping down as coach of Swedish Championship gold-winning Mjällby. Instead, he will become the club's technical director.

Assistant coach Karl Marius Aksum will take over as head coach, the club writes on its website.

The change is being made to "achieve a long-term solution for both Karl and Anders and at the same time meet the needs around Mjällby AIF to constantly achieve continuous improvement as a club," says club manager Jacob Lennartsson.

Torstensson returned to Mjällby in 2021 and has been head coach since 2023. This year he took the team all the way to a stunning first Swedish championship gold medal, and also set a new Allsvenskan scoring record of 75 points. At the same time, he is living with a cancer diagnosis, chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

"Of course there was a strong desire to continue building and take the next step towards European qualification. At the same time, I know the hard work it takes, and it is rare to be given the opportunity to hand over the baton when you are at the top. That opportunity, combined with my new position, which attracts me a lot, was the basis for my decision," says Torstensson.

Norwegian Karl Marius Aksum is a real coaching secret who was brought in from Odds' U19 team in 2023. He has a doctorate in visual perception, simplified scanning of the pitch - knowledge that he has used to introduce a more offensive game in Mjällby.

Corrected: In a previous version, Mjällby's points in the Allsvenskan were incorrectly stated. The correct number is 75.
