Leading stock indexes in Shanghai and Shenzhen were down in Friday's initial trading, with the composite index down 0.5 percent and 0.8 percent, respectively.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index was up 0.9 percent, and in South Korea, it was almost a rally, seemingly completely unaffected by the political turmoil in the country over the past month. The Kospi index was up 2.2 percent after a few hours of trading.
The stock exchange in Tokyo remains closed for the weekend.
