The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.8 percent, the broad-based S&P 500 index rose 0.4 percent to a new record high at the close, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 0.9 percent.
The rise in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices was largely due to the climb in index-heavy technology giants such as Apple and Microsoft, with gains of 1.1 and 2.2 percent, respectively.
Microsoft is due to report its quarterly results on Wednesday, as is electric car manufacturer Tesla - which fell 1.0 percent.
The dollar fell further during the day and is trading at 8.79 kronor, the lowest level since autumn 2021.
