A few minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.5 percent. The broad-based S&P 500 index and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index were both down 0.1 percent.
Earlier in the day, it became known that Facebook's parent company Meta had agreed to buy several million chips from AMD, whose stock rose 7.1 percent.
