The composite indices in Shanghai and Shenzhen were both down 0.6 and 0.4 percent respectively at lunch local time.
The Tokyo stock exchange's Nikkei 225 index was simultaneously pointing to a plus of 0.2 percent, while the broader Topix index was down 0.3 percent.
In South Korea, the Kospi index stood at a plus of 0.4 percent.
