The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5 percent, but the broader S&P 500 index fell 0.5 percent and the Nasdaq's technology-heavy composite index fell 1.5 percent.
Chip giant AMD plunged 17.3 percent after a quarterly earnings report.
By contrast, server maker Super Micro Computer surged 13.8 percent.
Pharmaceutical companies also moved in different directions after the reports. Denmark's Novo Nordisk fell 6.2 percent in New York after a 17.2 percent plunge in Copenhagen. U.S. drugmaker Eli Lilly, on the other hand, rose 10.3 percent in New York.
Oil prices rose on rumors that a meeting between rivals the United States and Iran could fall apart, before the situation brightened again.
