The meeting in Rabat, Morocco, ended 1–1, but after winning on penalties, Congo-Kinshasa was able to secure Africa's place in an intercontinental World Cup playoff in March.
After the loss, Nigeria's national team captain Eric Chelle said that some leader of the opposing team "did voodoo" repeatedly, which made Chelle nervous.
Nigeria is now missing out on a World Cup for the second time in a row. Congo-Kinshasa has not played in the World Cup since 1974 – then under the then name Zaire.
