New Israeli attacks on the UN force in Lebanon

The UN's peacekeeping force in Lebanon, Unifil, reports on Wednesday evening that Israel has once again shelled one of the force's outposts in southern Lebanon. Several of the EU's defense ministers want to put greater pressure on Israel following the attacks.

UN soldiers stationed in the village of Kfar Kila report that they witnessed an Israeli tank opening fire on one of the force's watchtowers. The tower and two cameras were damaged in the attack, according to Unifil, which describes the shelling as "direct and apparently intentional".

During a video conference on Wednesday, 16 of the EU's defense ministers expressed a "common will" to "exercise maximum political and diplomatic pressure on Israel" to avoid further incidents, according to the Italian Defense Ministry.

The ministers represent the EU countries participating in the UN mission in Lebanon, and chose in connection with the conference to "strongly condemn" attacks on Unifil.

At the same time, Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz states that Unifil is of great importance to Israel – and that the mission will play a "key role" when the war against Hezbollah is over.

"Israel attaches great importance to Unifil's activities and has no intention of harming the organization or its personnel", Katz says in a post on X.

Last week, UN soldiers were injured after Israeli shelling against an observation tower, in one of several incidents.
