In a written statement, Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) emphasizes that Israel has the right to defend itself, but says that the Israeli government's announced plans for a large-scale military offensive with massive forced relocations are unacceptable.

"Sweden stands firm that Gaza's territory must not be reduced or altered", says Malmer Stenergard.

The right to defense must be exercised in accordance with international law, according to the minister.

"The UN's various organs testify that the food warehouses in Gaza are empty, and that there is a shortage of medicines and water. The civilian suffering is devastating".

Sweden also demands that Hamas immediately release the hostages, and urges the parties to return to a ceasefire and to resume negotiations.

"Hamas cannot have a place in a future government of Gaza. We want to see a united Gaza and West Bank under the leadership of a reformed Palestinian authority".
