Nine people, including seven Chinese tourists, were reportedly on board the minibus at the time of the accident. Only one person was found alive; the others are feared dead, Governor Igor Kobzev wrote on Telegram.

It is around minus ten degrees Celsius in the area, near Russia's border with Mongolia. In winter, it is common for locals and visitors who do not want to travel around the elongated Lake Baikal to cross its ice. This is currently strictly prohibited, the governor emphasizes.

Lake Baikal is the world's deepest lake and the sixth largest by surface area.
