When England won the European Championship on home soil in 2022, the defender Millie Bright was one of the most prominent players, but she will not be included when the national team is to defend its gold in Switzerland this summer.

Bright states on Instagram that she has declined to be selected for the English national team, which in 2023 lost in the World Championship final against Spain.

”My pride and my ego tell me to play, but I think the team and the supporters deserve more. Right now, I cannot give 100 percent, either mentally or physically”, writes the 31-year-old, who has made 88 international appearances and six goals for England.

She writes that it is not right to take a place from another player in the squad.

"This is right for my health, my future in sports and most importantly for the team”, writes Bright, who has won numerous titles with Chelsea since she joined the London club in 2015.

The European Championship will take place 2–27 July in Switzerland.
