"Ukrainian units continue to hold the northern part of Pokrovsk. In the area around Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, we are actively blocking enemy attempts to gather assault infantry groups and advance around these communities," he said, Sky News reported.
Russia has claimed that its forces have taken control of the city, a claim that has been consistently denied by Ukraine.
Pokrovsk is an important logistics and railway hub and a Russian takeover could make it easier for the country to advance towards other parts of Ukraine.
