Mike Johnson to step down as House speaker after Democrats win majority

Several American media outlets report that US House Speaker Mike Johnson has announced he is stepping down as the Republicans’ leader in the chamber.

Republican Mike Johnson will step down as Speaker of the House of Representatives after the Democrats won a majority.

Republicans will therefore have to choose a new caucus leader. The race is expected to be between the party's candidates, Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan, according to CNN.

The Democrats' current caucus leader and minority leader in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, is likely to be appointed the new Speaker of the House.
