On Sunday, a woman was found lifeless aboard a small boat that had traveled from the French coast to Britain across the English Channel. No distress call from the person in the boat was heard, the AFP news agency reports.
Despite resuscitation attempts, the woman was confirmed dead by British police.
"This latest tragedy highlights the terrible dangers of small boats attempting to cross. We continue to work tirelessly with the French authorities and others to prevent these risky journeys," a spokesperson for the UK Home Office said, the BBC reports.
A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing the death of another person.
In the past week, French and British authorities have seen a clear increase in attempts to cross the Channel - almost 800 migrants crossed the strait, the BBC reports.
Calm sea conditions are believed to be behind the increased attempts.
