Two supporting pillars in the skyscraper's structure have bent and buckled, according to the New York City Fire Department, the New York Times reports. The discovery was made shortly before 8 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
The building is undergoing an extensive, complex renovation from office to residential. The renovation includes an 11-storey extension on a 22-storey base structure.
"We are still seeing construction continue to move," said Zohran Mamdani, mayor of New York.
Steel beams to stabilise the building are reportedly on their way to the site. While the building is being secured, several blocks have been evacuated and traffic has been diverted.
