The agreement revolves around the bio-CCS project in Värtahamnen, where carbon dioxide is to be sucked up from the chimney to be stored under the seabed. Since what is burned in the power plant is biofuel, it is counted as minus emissions.
"A clear signal that companies with high climate ambitions on the voluntary market continue to focus on combating climate change", says Anders Egelrud, CEO of Stockholm Exergi, in a press release.
Microsoft has previously had an agreement on minute emissions with the energy company. But it is now being increased from 3.3 million tons of carbon dioxide to over 5 million tons.
"We are pleased to be able to expand our commitment, which in turn reflects our progress towards achieving our ambitious goals of negative carbon footprint by 2030", says Brian Marrs, Head of Energy and Carbon Removal, at Microsoft, in the press release.
