People couldn't believe that I said no for reasons other than that my marriage was about to end, she says in the podcast IMO, which she leads together with her brother Craig Robinson.

That former President Barack Obama attended Donald Trump's inauguration alone on January 20 raised many an eyebrow. But in the podcast, lawyer and author Michelle Obama explains that after her time in the White House, she is in therapy and practices not always doing things for others.

We survived it. I hope we made our fellow citizens proud. My girls are whole, thank God. But what happened to me, she wonders.

Saying no is "a muscle" that must be exercised, especially for famous black women, Obama asserts. She was not present at former President Jimmy Carter's funeral in early January either.

It took all my strength not to do the right thing or what was perceived as the right thing – but what was right for me. It was hard, she says about the refusals.

Michelle Obama delivered a acclaimed speech at the Democrats' convention in August. The 61-year-old frequently appears in discussions about who the party members want to see as their next presidential candidate.
