It is during a visit to a film festival in the Czech city of Karlovy Vary that Michael Douglas is asked what he thinks about the current political situation in the USA.

Our country is flirting with autocracy, like other democracies in the world. I hope that what we are struggling with right now can be a reminder of all the hard work that the Czech Republic has gone through to become free and independent, and that democracy should not be taken for granted, he says according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Douglas emphasizes "how valuable democracy is, how vulnerable it is and that it must always be protected", but does not want to mention Donald Trump by name.

I think our president's name has been mentioned enough during the short time he has been president, says Douglas.

At the same time, he expresses concern about the role that money has come to play in politics.

People nowadays enter politics just to make money, and we maintain an American ideal that no longer exists.

Douglas was in the city to present a restored version of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" ahead of the film's 50th anniversary, where he was one of the producers.
