Mia Threapleton made her film debut in "A Little Chaos". Then she took a six-year hiatus from the film world.
In 2022, she reunited with her mother in an episode of the TV series "I Am Ruth". Since then, the roles have continued to come, which has led to her recently experiencing her first Cannes festival.
This is the biggest thing so far in my professional life. It came so early. I still have so much to learn, she says to TT.
Crossing the line
"This", it's Wes Anderson's new film "The Phoenician Scheme". Benicio del Toro plays a ruthless magnate who literally crosses the line. Mia Threapleton plays the daughter, whom he hasn't had contact with for many years. She's a nun and reluctantly follows dad on a very Wes Anderson-esque journey.
Just like her mother, Mia Threapleton is very eloquent and communicative. She looks wide-eyed at the commotion it involves having a leading role in a film shown at the world's leading film festival.
I got the offer in 2023 and thought it had to be a mistake. I made an audition tape, sent it in, thought that was it. Then I met my agent, who called and said I got the role, and I said "it has to be a mistake, call and double-check", she recounts.
She did, she called me afterwards and said "this was embarrassing, they laughed at me, but it's true, you got the role".
Felt "creepy"
Many of Wes Anderson's actors return in film after film. She was the new girl in the gang. How did it feel?
Creeepy. When I came to the set, it was like the first day in a new school. I came into the lunchroom, didn't know anyone, but everyone shouted "come, sit with us". Everyone was so welcoming.
The filming was so much fun that I woke up every morning thinking "now I get to go to work again". I was even there on days I didn't work.
Even though the film is often an outrageous comedy, it has a more serious theme at its core.
It's a touching father-daughter story, very complex and multi-layered. She goes through an enormous change, she discovers herself.
