Mexico will send humanitarian aid - including food - to Cuba, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday, as the United States has stepped up pressure on the island nation.

Tensions have risen between the United States and Cuba in recent weeks. President Donald Trump has threatened punitive tariffs on countries that supply Cuba with oil and has claimed he asked Mexico to freeze its oil exports to Cuba.

Following the US capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Cuba has lost a major source of oil imports. Cuba’s foreign minister has said the country’s population will be “exposed to extreme living conditions.” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says food and other “humanitarian aid” will be sent to Cuba as a result of the situation.

Meanwhile, Trump announced on Sunday that the United States has begun negotiations with Cuba. The purpose and structure of the negotiations remain unclear.

"Cuba is a failed nation. It has been that way for a long time, but now they don't have Venezuela to lean on. So we're talking to the top leadership of Cuba to see what happens," Trump told reporters on Sunday.
