Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says at a press conference on Sunday Swedish time that Canada will respond by imposing tariffs on American goods worth $155 billion with a 25 percent tariff. This is a response to Trump's decision to impose tariffs on goods from Canada.

This will have real consequences for you, the American people, said Trudeau, and added that the tariffs will lead to higher prices on food and other products in the USA.

We are really not looking to escalate. But we will stand up for Canada, for Canadians and Canadian jobs, said Trudeau, and warned that the long-standing ties with the USA may now be damaged.

The Canadian tariffs will be introduced step by step starting on Tuesday.

China opposes

From China's side, it is stated that they "strongly oppose" the US decision on tariffs against Beijing, which will be met with "corresponding countermeasures". This says the country's trade department in a statement. China will also file a complaint against Washington to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Japan's Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato expresses "deep concern" over how the tariffs will affect the global economy.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum writes in an X-post that she has instructed her finance minister to implement a response that includes its own tariffs and other measures against the USA.

She also rejects the White House's formulation that there would be an "unacceptable alliance" between the Mexican government and organizations involved in drug trafficking.

"If there is an alliance of this kind anywhere, it is rather in the USA, where gun shops sell powerful weapons to these criminal groups", writes Sheinbaum in the post.

Different percentage rates

The announcement comes after Trump signed a decision that means a 25 percent tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada from February 4. A 10 percent tariff will be imposed on goods from China, according to the White House. This percentage rate also applies to energy imports from Canada.

The decision also includes clauses that the tariffs will increase if the three countries respond with countermeasures in different ways.
