In total, 10,000 soldiers from the army and national guard will be deployed along the country's northern border, according to an agreement between Trump and Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum.

On Wednesday, the first deployed soldiers were seen at work. Masked and armed soldiers from the national guard gathered up ladders hidden in ditches on the outskirts of the border city Ciudad Juárez, reports AP. Patrols were also seen around the border city Tijuana.

Trump promised on Monday to postpone the introduction of tariffs for at least a month. In exchange, Sheinbaum promised to strengthen the border and crack down on fentanyl smuggling. The US said they would do more to ensure that American weapons do not end up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels.

Before the agreement, Trump announced that goods from Mexico would be subject to punitive tariffs of 25 percent.
