Two Mexican ships carrying 814 tons of food and supplies have arrived in Cuba, which is being hard-pressed by the tightened US blockade.

Since Washington overthrew Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the communist-ruled island has lost its most important oil supplier. Donald Trump has since threatened punitive tariffs on all countries that supply oil to Cuba.

This has contributed to a growing energy crisis in the country, which has been under extensive U.S. sanctions since 1962.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has warned of the humanitarian consequences of Trump's actions and promised to deliver emergency aid to Cuba. The arriving ships are loaded with milk, meat, beans, rice, and hygiene items, according to the Mexican Foreign Ministry.
