Since Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro was arrested this weekend, US President Donald Trump has emphasized the United States' dominance over the Western Hemisphere.
Trump has described this weekend's arrest of Maduro as an update to the so-called Monroe Doctrine of 1823, which declared that Latin America belonged to the US sphere of influence.
"America does not belong to any doctrine or power. The American continent belongs to the peoples of the countries that make it up," Claudia Sheinbaum said in a speech on Monday.
