The Mexican politician Martha Laura Mendoza, mayor of the municipality Tepalcatepec, and her husband have been shot dead.

The two were attacked when they left their home, according to the city's former mayor Guillermo Valencia.

This is the second time in a short period that a similar incident has occurred. Just two days earlier, perpetrators stormed Lilia Garcia's, mayor of San Mateo Piñas, office and killed one of her employees.

Politicians and publicly employed individuals in Mexico have become an increasingly common target for criminal gangs in recent years. About 480,000 people have lost their lives due to deadly violence, often linked to drug trafficking, since Mexico declared war on the domestic drug cartels in 2006.
