A high-ranking leader within the notorious Sinaloa cartel been shot to death in clashes with the Mexican army.
Jorge Humberto Figueroa was, according to local media, responsible for security for one of the two factions that are waging a fierce war within the cartel. He was killed when the military attempted to apprehend him on Friday.
American authorities had previously offered a reward of one million dollars, equivalent to nearly ten million kronor, for information leading to his capture. He is suspected, among other things, of money laundering and fentanyl smuggling to the USA.
The Sinaloa cartel was previously led by the notorious Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. He was arrested in 2016 and sentenced to life imprisonment in the USA in 2019. The war that is currently ongoing between factions within the group has claimed around 1,200 lives since September last year.
