"This means that the Crown Prince will follow the entire official program in Tokyo from June 1 to 3, but the visit to the port city of Hachinohe on June 4 is canceled," the Norwegian Royal House said.

Mette-Marit suffers from pulmonary fibrosis, which Haakon described this week as both serious and worsening.

King Harald has also spoken out about the increasingly bleak situation.

"I think it's very sad," he said on Thursday.

The doctors said it would happen. But we believed and hoped it would happen later, not now.
