The British government is setting up an inquiry to review background checks after an internal review revealed shortcomings. Several cases of misconduct have been reported. In addition, two police officers have been convicted of repeated rape offences.
The Metropolitan Police, the UK's largest police force, said background check standards had to be lowered to meet increased recruitment targets for 2019-2023.
Previously, the Metropolitan Police was accused of widespread homophobia, racism and sexism within the force in a high-profile investigation in 2023.
