Facebook's and Instagram's parent company Meta has secured the delivery of electricity for 20 years ahead with a nuclear power plant.
The power plant in Clinton is to deliver, according to the agreement, starting in June 2027, all the energy it produces to Meta. The energy is needed by Meta to be able to build out its AI capacity.
Meta announced in February that it plans to build an underwater cable between five continents. The cable is to transfer data, including to be able to develop AI faster.
The nuclear power plant in Illinois will now expand its production instead of being shut down as planned, which saves 1,100 jobs.
Meta is not alone in securing energy from nuclear power. Both Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have signed agreements to take part of the electricity produced from nuclear power plants to drive new giant investments.
